Thoracic surgical procedures are usually done to repair, restore or remove lung tissues.
Operations on the lungs include;
Lobectomy: A surgical operation to remove one of the lobes of lung tissue. There are three lobes in the right lungs and two in left ones.
Pneumonectomy: Removing an entire lung from the chest.
Segmentectomy (Wedge Resection):Part or little piece of lung tissues is taken off.
Sleeve Resection: A part of one lung and neighboring lung tissues are taken out before attaching the remaining pieces.
Pleurectomy/Decortication: The partial taking away of pleura (coverings around the lungs) sometimes accompanied by fibrosis destruction also.
Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS): It is a minimally invasive approach using small cuts and thoracoscopy(camera).
Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery: The surgery is performed without robotic systems.
